RIS 2025 — Human Appeal's Speaker's Corner with Farooq
The Verse
"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility (sakina) in them; and He placed between you affection (mawaddah) and mercy (rahmah). Indeed in that are signs for a people who reflect." — Ar-Rum 30:21
The Design of Marriage
S → M → R
Sakinah (tranquility) is the destination.
Mawaddah (affection) + Rahmah (mercy) are how you get there.
When Money Gets in the Way
Without clarity, money corrodes each one:
The Design | The Corrosion | |
Mawaddah | Small, loving gestures | Affection becomes accounting |
Rahmah | Patience and mercy | Compassion turns into resentment |
Sakinah | Home is a sanctuary | The sanctuary becomes a battlefield |
Three Things Couples Need Clarity On
- The Law — Islamic and Western law have different defaults on money in marriage. Know both. Then choose.
- The Lens — How do you see money when it arrives? Is it "ours" immediately, or does each spouse keep control first?
- The System — Where does money live? Where does it flow? What needs discussion, and what doesn't?
The Three Lenses
Lens | What it means |
Total Combining | All earnings are "ours" from the moment they're earned |
Partial Combining | Some is shared, some is personal — agreed percentages |
Independent Management | Finances are mostly separate; shared input only for agreed expenses |
Any lens can work — but only with consensus and communication.
