Why You Should Designate Powers of Attorney
Your legally valid Islamic Will gives an individual (the executor) authority to make decisions on your behalf after you die.
A power of attorney is a legal document that gives an individual authority to make decisions on your behalf before you die.
Powers of attorney are important to have in place in case you are incapacitated (i.e. you're not healthy enough to make decisions on your own).
There are two types of power of attorney you can grant someone:
đź’° Financial Power of Attorney
This gives someone authority to act on your behalf in financial and property matters. This is sometimes called an “Enduring Power of Attorney.”
🏥 Healthcare Power of Attorney
This gives someone authority to make decisions about your healthcare. There are several different names for this in Canada - a “proxy”, “directive,” “personal directive,” or “representation agreement.
- You can provide specific directions on this form describing how you’d like to be cared for in case you’re unable to articulate it yourself. A sample healthcare directive is provided below.
